KOZHIKODE, KERALA — The food processing sector is complex, unforgiving, and highly technical. While many consultants offer theoretical advice, the most effective guidance comes from those who have built, failed, learned, and scaled from the ground up. This is the story of Muhammed Rafeeque—professionally known as Rafeeque Kavanur—and how his hands-on entrepreneurial journey transformed him into Kerala’s leading food technologist and the driving force behind the Food Tech Research & Incubation Centre (FTRIC).
Rafeeque combines 13 years of hard-earned industry experience with a robust academic foundation. He holds degrees in food technology from Calicut University and Pondicherry University, and he is currently advancing his expertise as a doctoral research scholar at the Amity Institute of Biotechnology at Amity University Rajasthan. But it is his practical journey that sets him apart as an industrial expert mentor.
The 2013 Snack Manufacturing Trial by Fire
Rafeeque’s career did not begin in an advisory boardroom; it started on the factory floor. In 2013, he launched his first entrepreneurial venture: Ernad Agro Foods, a snack manufacturing unit in Malappuram, Kerala. Focusing on processing raw plantains (raw bananas) and cassava into export-quality snacks under the brand name “Le Banana”, he faced the grueling reality of running a food business.
He navigated the immense hurdles that every food startup founder encounters: struggling with machinery selection, managing raw material consistency, wrestling with food costing, and facing technical product failures. He learned by making mistakes, facing the harsh practicalities of factory operations, and troubleshooting errors in real-time on the production line.
These early struggles became his greatest asset. Because he had fought through the complexities of process automation, shelf-life failures, and financial bottlenecks firsthand, he understood exactly what early-stage founders needed.
The Shift to Mentorship and the 2018 Research Lab
Word of Rafeeque’s hands-on problem-solving abilities spread. Soon, emerging entrepreneurs and established food businesses began approaching him for guidance. They needed help starting their own food startups, solving technical product issues, understanding machinery details, and optimizing food costing.
Realizing that the industry desperately needed technical support backed by real-world experience, he pivoted from manufacturing to innovation. In 2018, Rafeeque established a dedicated Food Research Lab. The sole purpose of this lab was to support food tech startups, helping them develop robust products and driving food innovation across the region.
The Birth of FTRIC in 2021
The demand for Rafeeque’s pragmatic, science-backed guidance skyrocketed. The sheer volume of people approaching him for support necessitated a larger, more structured platform. The industry had organically made him a consultant.
In response, he founded the Food Tech Research & Incubation Centre (FTRIC) in 2021. Positioned as the leading food consultancy and incubation hub in the state, FTRIC operates from its headquarters on the Calicut Airport Road. Today, Rafeeque serves as the Technical Director of FTRIC.
His extensive track record speaks for itself. Since his early days, Rafeeque has developed more than 450 commercially viable products and mentored over 350 startups. His technical consultancy spans borders, having provided high-level industrial support across India, Qatar, Russia, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the UK, Australia, and Oman.
Through FTRIC, Rafeeque now provides end-to-end solutions, engaging in:
- Custom Product Formulation & Innovation: Ensuring products are scalable and cost-effective.
- Shelf-Life Extension: Utilizing advanced technologies like Retort processing, HPP, and IQF freezing.
- Factory Layout & Automation: Translating his early manufacturing lessons into efficient, compliant plant designs.
- Startup Mentorship: Working closely with the Kerala Startup Mission to nurture the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.
By transforming his own entrepreneurial hurdles into actionable industry expertise, Rafeeque Kavanur has built FTRIC into the ultimate technical launchpad for the next generation of global food brands.
